Maddox Fleming's Hatty lifts Rockets to title

Maddox Fleming scores one of his three goals Sunday

In the first minute of the third period, Rochester’s Ethan Norman scored to put Rochester up 3-2 and touched off a scoring frenzy that saw Rochester score five goals en route to thumping host Stillwater 7-2 in the Pewee AA championship of the Lumberjack Cup. Maddox Fleming scored three goals for Rochester, which also got goals from Lyncoln Howarth, Isaac Leeman, and Tyler Haskins in the win. Fleming, Leeman, and Haskins are part of a great young nucleus of first year players that lead the way for the Rockets.

Gunner Arens scored both goals for Stillwater, which pumped 35 shots on goal, only to be stonewalled 33 times by Rochester goalie Sam Decker.

Rochester wins the Lumberjack Cup, but the trophy is an axe

One of the keys to victory for Rochester was its penalty kill, which held the Stillwater power play off the board despite the Ponies’ six power play opportunities.

Decker’s outstanding play was supplemented by the defensive prowess of Rochester’s McKenzie Rich. Rich, another first year standout, was extremely effective in the defensive zone, and on one penalty kill, she cleared the puck three times and made a diving save to knock the puck away from a Stillwater skater.

Rochester scored its seven goals on just 15 shots, taking advantage of loose pucks and shots from close range.
