The James Gang got a better welcome than Mankato West did last night

The two leading contenders for the Section 1A ticket to the Class A tourney next March played last night at the Northfield Ice Arena.  Northfield and Mankato West, tangled.  Northfield won easily.  Now the Raiders are favored to make their first state tourney appearance ever.  Both teams had winning records in their opening three weeks of play.  Both teams are celebrating New Prague's departure this year from Section 1A.  The Trojans, perennial Section 1A champs, were moved by the MSHSL to Section 2A this year.  That left the 12 team Section 1A Championship wide open.  Northfield, last year’s Section A runner-up, lost to New Prague 2-1 in the championship game.  Northfield and Mankato West, a team that lost 3-2 to Northfield in the sectional semifinals last season have filled the gap left by New Prague’s departure.  Both teams can win the Section 1A title this season.  But last night, after Northfield beat Mankato West 8-3, it would not be unreasonable for Raider supporters to make plans to be in St. Paul next March 2-5.

Northfield's Connor Malecha celebrates scoring Northfield's fourth goal in the first period of their 8-3 win.

Northfield

The Northfield Raiders have struggled in the early season posting a 3-2 record losing to Kennedy 4-2 and New Prague 4-0 and were clear underdogs going into last night’s game.  But the Raiders had beaten Rochester Century in Rochester Saturday 8-1 behind three Halvorson goals (two by Jacob and one by Lucas) and looked ready to play Tuesday.  The Raiders lost five players from last season’s Section 1A runner-up team to graduation.  The five were a significant part of the Raider line-up; but Northfield returned two of their top three scorers in Lukas Halvorson (19 points/7 goals) and Ryan Torbenson (30 points/17 goals).  As a bonus, the Raiders have gotten surprise offensive from junior Nicholas Kvernmo.  Kvernmo is the team scoring leader in the early going.  At defense, seniors Nathan Marek and Max Olson and juniors Zakary Von Ruden and Griffin Loecher return.  They are joined by junior Gage Hofstad and sophomore Jack Fox.  Junior Ryan Bielenberg has been in the nets for the Raiders posting a 3-2-0 record.

Mankato West

Mankato West won their first four games of this season before being beaten by Orono Saturday 4-2.  The Scarlet return six of their top ten scorers from last year’s Big 9 conference championship team.  This season West has been led by offensively by seniors Tyler Loe and Brandon Pahl and by juniors Kyle Looft and Jimmy Miller.   Looft leads Mankato’s defensive corps with 10 points/6 goals.  The four Scarlet players have collectively posted 38 points/16 goals in the five games played.  Seniors Willie Meyer and Jarrid Nickels, junior Lucas Preiffer, sophomore Ethan Swenson, and ninth grader Nick Wieben complete the Scarlets defensive corps.   All of the Scarlet defensemen except Wieben skated on last season’s conference championship team.  Junior Jackson Peterson has been in the nets for all five games and started last night.  Peterson has posted a 4-1-0 record giving up an average of 2.2 goals a game while stopping 85% of the shots on net.

Period 1: Jesse had a better chance

The first minutes of the opening period was evenly played with both teams having chances.  The Scarlets had the best chance, but Raider goalie Bielenberg made the big stop.  Gradually, Northfield started to build pressure, moving the play more and more into the Mankato West side of the ice.  A high stick penalty followed a minute later by a slashing penalty put the Northfield on the power play.  For one minute they would have a 5-on-3 advantage with the faceoff to the right of the Mankato net.  But the Scarlets’ Tyler Loe, like Cole Younger, stole the puck off the faceoff.  Beating the Raider defense down the right of the boards, Loe cut to the Northfield net to beat Bielenberg.  It was a rare, two player shorthanded score and put the Raiders down 1-0 with just 10 seconds gone in the 5-on-3.  Revved up, the Scarlets killed the 5-on-3 power play and almost killed the 5-on-4 Raider power play.  With five seconds remaining, Ryan Torbenson found Jacob Halvorson in the slot for the score.  After the tying score, the Scarlets were pummeled by the Raiders.  The Northfield offense took over the game trapping the Scarlets in the West zone and peppering the Mankato net with shots from every direction.  The Mankato West team must have felt like the James Gang trapped in a Northfield bank.  They took “incoming” from every direction and Northfield built a 4-1 lead.  It would have been a bigger lead but for the play of goalie Jackson Peterson.  Peterson faced 21 shots on net in the opening period.

Two minutes after pounding on the Scarlets’ defense, Northfield’s Torbenson tipped defenseman Zakary Von Ruden’s shot into the net for the second Raider score.  Thirty seconds later, Jacob Halvorson batted a rebounding puck off a melee in front of the Scarlet goal into the net for a third score.  Thirty three seconds later, Northfield’s Conner Malecha cut left in the slot and beat Bielenberg for the fourth goal.  Northfield had pounded the West net scoring four times in three and half minutes.  But West proved they could fire back.  West called timeout and settled enough to knock the puck loose along the right boards where the Scarlets’ Ben Heichel came up with the puck.  Heichel moved the puck into the Northfield zone and got off a diving shot from the boards that beat Bielenberg to cut the Raiders’ lead to 4-2.

The net billows as Northfield's Jacob Halvorson one-times this shot from the slot for the Raider's first score tying the game 1-1

Period 2: The Siege Continues

The second period was evenly played.  Mankato West is a good team and their offense settled and started to move the puck and establish control in the Northfield zone.  Northfield would counter.  In the second period, both teams managed their line changes well.  Neither team was able to trap the other for an extended shift in the period.  Northfield had the best chance for a score early in the period when goalie Peterson made an initial stop along the right pipe and had to dive left to stop a shot from inside the crease into the open weak side.  The game settled with a lot of the play happening in the neutral zone as both offenses got their fore checking going.  Northfield scored with five minutes gone in the period.  A Scarlet forward trying to gain control of the puck behind the Scarlet net off a dump, got checked off the puck.  A Northfield forward took possession and fed a melee of players in front of the net that resulted in a shot that the Raiders thought was a score, but Peterson somehow made the save.  In a delayed reaction, the puck bounced loose on the left side of the net to Northfield’s Grant Sawyer.  Sawyer shot the puck past Peterson to put Northfield up 5-2.

Play got more physical in the last half of the second period.  Five penalties were called in nine minutes.  Northfield got the only goal in the second period.  Though the Raiders led 5-2 going into the third period the game was not over.  The siege continued, but the Scarlets were still fighting back.  One ominous event late in the period, Mankato West drew a tripping penalty with ten seconds left in the period.

Northfield's Jacob Halvorson is stopped on this rush. Halvorson got the hat trick in last night's game.

Can Northfield Win the Rest?

Northfield will be favored in their remaining twenty games this season.  It is tough to do, but the Raiders can make a 22-0 run.

Northfield Nick Kvernmo's shot is stopped by Mankato goalie Jackson Peterson. The Raiders line of Kvernmo, Erik Bartho, and Connor Malecha had a good game. All three Northfield lines contributed.

Period 3: Capturing the Win

Northfield has a good power play.  Rested and focused they came out of the locker room and put their skills to good use.  They controlled the puck and the play inside the West zone for most of the first two minutes scoring just before the power play ended.  The Raiders defenseman Nathan Marek passed the puck to Ryan Torbenson in the low right faceoff circle.  Torbenson made a quick move towards the top of the faceoff circle opening up a passing lane to Lucas Halvorson moving into the weak side left.  Halvorson one-timed the pass into the back of the Scarlets’ net to put Northfield up 6-2.  The quick score ended any West chance of a comeback.  The third period became one of West’s defense trying to force the Northfield offense at the Raider blue line.  When the Scarlets succeeded they kept pressure on Raider’s goal.  When they failed, Northfield had a solo or 2-on-1 rush on the Mankato West net.  Jacob Halvorson scored on one rush beating Peterson through the 5-hole after cutting across the top of the crease.  West’s Jimmy Miller scored off of pressure with 10 minutes to go in the game.  Northfield’s Sawyer got his second goal of the game on a breakaway beating Peterson from the right slot.  The game ended 8-3.  Northfield outshot the Scarlet gang 45-29 in the game.  Northfield is likely to go unbeaten in their rest of their regular season games.  Mankato West escaped heading west along the Minnesota River and will play Northfield again.  The next shootout will likely be for the Big 9 title and the #1 seed to Section 1A.  Not that the outcome of the January game will effect the two teams run to state.  It will be a tune-up.  The two are likely to meet in the Section 1A finals.  That matters.

The Raiders' Lucas Halvorson scores a third period goal on this weak side play one-timing a quick pass from Ryan Torbenson (Torbenson is right out of picture).

A Few Notes

1. Northfield is a physically strong team that is quick once they get rolling.  Their power play is good controlling the puck and taking good shots on net.  They skated three lines against Mankato West; West went with two lines.

2.  The Northfield Arena was reasonably full but not packed.  The word on how good their team is this season has not gotten out.  After winning 8-3 last night, that should change.

3.  Northfield Arena is not easy to find especially on a dark night.  For those who have not been there remember always turn right at Jefferson.  The arena is “old school” and has character.  When it is packed, it is something to attend.  Raider fans are some of the most vocal around and sit above the ice.  Refs with sensitive ears need to focus on the game.

4.  Mankato West has been the #2 seed in the Section 1A playoffs the last three years and appears to be headed to the #2 seed this year.  West has not been to the state tourney since 2008 when they lost to Duluth Marshall 2-1 in the quarterfinals.  Northfield has never sent a team to a state hockey tournament.  Neither has St. Paul Academy.   SPA is one of two favorites to win Section 4A (Mahtomedi is the other).

Mankato goalie Jackson Peterson makes the stop.

Can Mankato West Win Section 1A?  Mankato West plays St. Cloud Cathedral and St. Cloud Apollo and potentially plays St. Paul Academy twice in the next month.  How the Scarlets fair in those three or four games will be an indication of how well they will do trying to repeat as Big 9 Champs and win Section 1A.

What is Next?

The Raiders have twenty games left to play in the regular season and will be favored to win 17 of the 20.  Only Red Wing and the second game against Mankato West stand in the way of Northfield finishing with 20 game winning season.  The Raiders will play at Mankato East, Rochester Lourdes, Rochester John Marshall, Winona, and Waconia before breaking for the Christmas/New Year holidays.  They will be favored to win all five games playing teams that collectively have 6-14-0 record for the season going into Tuesday’s games.  Northfield will not be playing in any holiday tourney.  Mankato West has a tougher schedule playing Albert Lea and Winona and three tough opponents, St. Cloud Cathedral, St. Cloud Apollos, and “the Bulldogs” (Le Sueur-Henderson, St. Peter, Tri-City United, and Cleveland high schools or LSHSPTCUC) before the holiday break.  Those five teams collectively are playing .500 hockey (10-10-0).  The Scarlet will play in the Duluth Heritage Classic between the holidays.  The Heritage Classic this year includes St. Paul Academy, Apple Valley, the #1 ranked Wisconsin team Hudson, and the #6 ranked Wisconsin team Eau Claire Memorial.  After the holidays Mankato West returns to league play January 7th with a game against Mankato East and then plays a tough St. Paul Academy team January 9th.
