Saint Cloud Apollo used a two minute thirty second scoring outburst to skate to a 4-1 win over rival St. Cloud Cathedral Saturday night.  Eagles goalie Nick Althaus and Cathedral net-minder Keegan Karki both made nineteen saves in what began as a goalie dual that turned into a two and half minute nightmare for the Crusader Hockey team.  Cathedral hoped an early first period goal and solid performance by sophomore goalie Keegan Karki  would lead to an upset over the third ranked Eagles.

Crusader forward Jake Van Halbeck's tip-in goal assisted by Trevor Cornelius and Jeron Hirshfeld gave Cathedral an early first period lead and momentum.  The early goal and four straight Eagle penalties seemed to give the Crusaders a jump in their step and momentum and ample opportunities to put the Eagles away.   Like he has done so many times, Eagle goalie Nick Althaus took over and stopped the Crusaders cold and kept the lead at one after back to back five on three power plays.

The second period brought a completely different style of hockey.  Both teams stayed out of the penalty box and gave the fans non-stop up and down the ice action and physical play.  The Eagles eventually took control of play using a relentless fore-check to create numerous scoring chances.  Cathedral also got great goaltending behind Karki and this action packed period ended with Cathedral still clinging to a 1-0 lead.

With the great goalie play on display, it looked as if this game could end 1-0 in favor of Cathedral.  Then the game took a dramatic turn.   Apollo took advantage of its first power play opportunity when Brandon Bissett finally solved Karki and the Crusaders.  After an enthusiastic celebration in front of their student section, Trevor Vossen found the back of the net less that a minute later.  The fireworks were not over, as Gino Lucia would scored a minute and half later.  A Crusaders timeout couldn't stop the Eagle's momentum.  Ten seconds after the Lucia goal Trevon Vossen slammed a Carter Reiland pass into the net for the fourth Eagle goal and this one was over to ice the game in favor of the Eagles, 4-1.
