Sophomore Blake Brandt scores first Varsity goal in overtime to lift Lakeville North to win Saturday
Before the big weekend of hockey, YHH took a stab at how it might turn out. In some areas we looked all knowing, in others we looked like we were from outer space. Here is a recap of what went down and a report card on our picks.
Benilde was the big winner this weekend, beating No. 1AA Eden Prairie 6-5 in overtime on a Zach Risteau snipe. Auggie Moore was the catalyst for the Knights scoring two goals, none bigger than a SHG late in the third period to tie it.
Prediction: WRONG
Lakeville North beat Grand Rapids in Overtime as well. This time it was Blake Brandt netting the GWG on a rebound for the Panthers.
Prediction: WRONG
St. Cloud Apollo beat Cathedral 4-1 on a four third period goals in a two minute span to lift the Eagles to the big win. Senior Trevor Vossen had two goals for The Outsiders.
Prediction: CORRECT
Auggie Moore was huge for BSM Friday in their 6-5 OT win over EP
Three of YHH's top ten played in Faribault this past weekend as part of a showcase of top teams from all over North America at Shattuck St. Mary's.
#3 Omaha went 3-0 defeating CYA (1-0), Northern Alberta (4-0), and the #9 Chicago Mission (7-6).
The #9 Mission were short some top end players and only skated 12 or 13 skaters at a time. They fell to SSM (4-1) and Omaha (7-6).
#4 Shattuck lost to Friday to Team Illinois (4-1), beat the Mission (4-1) and then thumped the Chicago Young Americans (9-1).
Caleb Rule scores for SSM U16 Saturday
We predicted Brainerd would beat Fargo in Sunday's final...we got the Brainerd part right, but not the result. Andover got enough scoring from their young guns and stellar goaltending from Ben Fritsinger to win the Battle for the Axe Sunday.
Prediction: WRONG
The Spudtacular (hmmm...sounds familiar) was an eight team hosted in Moorhead. We thought that Mankato would be a tough team to beat after how well they have performed so far this year. We took them over the Wheatkings, after all, how scary can a Wheatking actually be on ice, right?
Prediction: WRONG
Harrison Vandermey scores SHG for Andover in their win Sunday
Zarley Ziemski had a hat trick to lead Duluth East to Wolfpack Invite title Sunday
The field at the Wolfpack Invite was stacked with a bunch of teams that had similar resumes. Anything could happen and like we predicted it came down to a couple of games (White Bear/Owatonna and PCG/East)...those games ended in ties, so tiebreakers decided the Owatonna berth in the championship and Mahtomedi decided the fate of PCG by beating them and pushing the Hounds into the title game against Owatonna.
Zarley Ziemski had a hatty for the Hounds as they beat upstart Owatonna 4-2 to win the Invite Sunday.
Beau Cournyea had the lone goal for Mound Westonka as the Whitehawks went on to beast Mounds View Irondale 1-0 to win the PWA division.
Prediction: WRONG (note: we did not pick the PWA, had we, we would have selected MVI)
Edina White won the EP PWB, by beating Eden Prairie 6-0 Sunday
Prediction: Correct
What do you know? We cover all levels of hockey on YHH. Squirts, PeeWees, Bantams, Girls, Tier 1 and HS. We obviously know our Squirts. Sibley knocks off Park Cottage Grove 4-3. The Wolfpack trailed Mound Westonka 5-2 Saturday and fought back to tie the Whitehawks and win a tiebreaker...then Sunday they almost did it again. They trailed Sibley 4-1 and narrowed the gap to 4-3, before the Warriors finally finished them off.
Minnetonka Silver beat Prior Lake White in Hibbing to grab that title. And, Prior Lake Gold won the Sibley Salute to Hockey SQB title with a win over Roseville.
Predictions: CORRECT
Sibley SQA, Champions of Salute to Hockey
