Chaska senior Zac Rodheffer scores against Ely

This post covers games played Saturday at the Chaska Community Center, Richfield Ice Arena, Apple Valley Sports Center, and Braemar Ice Arena.  Game summaries and pictures for the following games are part of this post in this order; Chasa beating Ely 9-2, Bloomington Kennedy beating Holy Angels 5-3, Burnsville beating Apple Valley 6-1, Elk River beating Grand Rapids 6-1, and Eden Prairie beating Edina 6-4.

Eden Prairie's Junter Johannes celebrates scoring nine minutes into the opening period to put the Eagles up 1-0 in their 6-4 win over Edina Saturday.

Ely ties Highland Park 3-3

In their game Friday afternoon against Highland Park, Park tied the score 1-1 after Ely took an early 1-0 lead in the first period.  Highland Park got the only second period goal to take a 2-1 lead into the third period.  Ely rallied in the opening minutes of the third period to lead 3-2.  The Scotts tied the game with three minutes left to play.  Neither team could score in a wild overtime period that saw 13 shots on the nets (Park outshooting Ely 7-6).

A penalty slowed the Timberwolves in the opening minute of play.  The Scots power play proved to be tough.  Ely killed that penalty and a minute later the Wolves’ Gage Merhar stole the puck from a Highland defender at the Scots’ blue line.  Merhar knocked the puck towards the Scots left face off circle.  He picked up the puck skating towards the face off dot and beat Scots goalie Jack Branby with a shot into the upper right corner.  Ely led 1-0.  Ted Pierce and Matthew Killoran got the assists.  Six minutes later, Highland tied the game when sophomore Billy Wengler one-timed a pass from the end boards behind Ely’s net past Wolves goalie Mark Kiloran for the score.  Charlie Sutmar and Gabe Nelson got the assists.  After Wengler got the second Scotts goal in the second period putting Highland up 2-1, Ely took the lead halfway through the third period on goals by Andy Krunkkala (Merhar got the assist) and Ted Pierce (Nick Mattila got the assist).  Ely’s goalie Mark Kiloran stopped 47 of 50 Highland Park shots; Scots goalie Jack Branby stopped 34 of 37 Timberwolves shots.

Highland Park beat another Section 7A team Moose Lake 4-1 Saturday.  The Scots play St. Paul Como Park this Wednesday and then travel to Waseca to play in the Waseca Invitational Tourney playing host Waseca, Pine City/Rush City, and Waconia.  The Scots lost to Como Park 5-2 early this season.  The game with Como Park will be their second of a three game season series.  With Highland Park already having lost to Simley 4-1 in their only other Section 4A game, a win over Como Park and a good Waseca tourney would definitely improve Highland Park's chances for a better seed in the February Section 4A playoffs.

Highland celebrates scoring the first goal in their game against Ely.

Ely's Jon Wenzel drives shot through Highland's goalie Jack Branby. The puck is deflect and misses just wide of the left post on this second period play.

Chaska beats Ely 9-2

In their game against Chaska Saturday, the Ely ran into two problems.  The Timberwolves defensive corps could not stop the faster Chaska forwards in the first half of the game and the Hawks ninth grade scoring leader Mike Koster added five points to his team leading point total (23 points/12 goals).  Chaska would consistently get the puck low and tie up the defense in the either corner.  Then the Hawks forwards would force the Timberwolves defenders to give up the puck along the borders and turn the attack on the net.  The Hawk rushes than became low odd man rushes on the Ely net resulting in a series of point blank shots on goalie Lori Husby.  The Hawks opening goal came one minute into the game.  The shot caught the Ely defense by surprise.  Chaska’s Blaine Warnert beat the Ely goaltender on a screen shot from the left blue line that snaked through a pack of players in the slot.  Two minutes later, Ely tied the game.  The Wolves' Jon Wenzel beat the Chaska defense on the right side and cut to the net blasting a shot that bounced off goalie Ben Urbanciz dropping into the left crease area to Thomas Montana breaking into the left slot.  Montana rapped the puck into the net to tie the game.  Wenzel and Andy Krunkkala got the assists.  The tie lasted twenty seconds.  The Hawks took the following faceoff and beat the Ely defense to score off a 2-on-1 rush.  Warnert got his second goal of the game.

Ely is off for the next nine days before playing Legacy Christian in the North Shore Holiday Tournament December 28th in Silver Bay.  The Wolves are slightly favored to win their bracket.  Legacy Christian is a tough team for the Wolves but beatable.  Moose Lake and Rice Lake (WI) play the other bracket game.  The bracket winner will most likely play North Shore.  The Storm lost their first game of the season to St. Louis Park 5-4 Saturday.  Ely has risen this season to the middle of Section 7A rankings with a new coach.  They are playing .500 hockey.  With most of the team back next season, the Wolves and Greenway could be the new threats to Hermantown domination of Section 7A next season.  Greenway (9-1) could be a threat to the Hawks this season if they beat Hibbing next Tuesday.  The Raiders will be in town after Christmas playing Spring Lake Park in the Schwan Cup Open Tourney.

Chaska is now 7-4 after their win over Ely.  The Hawks play in the Metro West Conference and in the Section 2AA playoffs and will likely have to play an Eden Prairie, Prior Lake or Minnetonka next February.  The Hawks are off over the Holidays and will not play until they host Simley January 5th.  They play their first Metro West Conference game against St. Louis Park January 7th and don't play another conference game until January 21st when they host Bloomington Kennedy.  Currently, Chaska is in the middle of the Section 2AA rankings.  The Chaska varsity draws players from the Chaska/Chanhassen Hockey Association.  At this point in the season, Chanhassen's varsity team has been playing slightly better than Chaska's varsity.

Chaska sophomore Micah Roane (#9) picks up a rebound and starts a 180 degree turn at the right of the Ely net....

Mciah Roane has completed his 180 degree turn and fired. The puck ended up in the Ely goal and may have bounced off the falling Timberwolves defender.

Bloomington Kennedy's Jory McWilliams scores on this breakaway to put the Eagles up 2-1 against Holy Angels.

Kennedy sweeps Holy Angels

Friday, Bloomington Kennedy edged Holy Angels 2-1.  In a tight game, Kennedy scored twice in the second period to win.  The Eagles’ Jacob Ekhom scored the winning goal.  Kennedy’s #2 scorer this season, Anders Gelecinskyj, scored the first Kennedy goal less than two minutes into the second period.  Holy Angels’ Pete Laird’s first period score gave the Stars and early 1-0.  The game was close, in part, due to Holy Angels holding Kennedy’s leading scorer Jory McWilliams scoreless in Friday’s game.  Saturday, behind McWilliams two first period unassisted scores, the Eagles beat the Stars 5-3 to sweep the two game series.

McWilliams who has been the leading scorer in the Red/Black League the past two years scored his first goal seven minutes into the opening period.  McWilliams picked off a pass at the Holy Angels blue line.  He broke left and skated into the high slot and blistered a shot past Stars’ goalie Sean Daley.  The Stars struck back quickly.  Ten seconds later, Holy Angels’ Riley Zangs scored to tie the game 1-1.  The tie only lasted 90 seconds before McWilliams went to work again.  This time he beat the Stars defense to a loose puck at the Holy Angels’ blue line center, evaded two Stars defenders and soloed to the Holy Angels’ net straight down the slot.  McWilliams got Daley down faking right with his stick and breaking left for the score.  Kennedy’s Edge Choudek scored late in the period putting the Eagles up 3-1 going into the second period.  Two simultaneous penalties were called on the Eagles one minute into the second period.  The Angels’ Matthew Reser scored a 5-on-3 power play goal cutting Kennedy’s lead to 3-2.  The first three minutes of the third period was tough on Holy Angels.  Kennedy’s Javaughn Soretire scored thirty seconds into the period.  A minute later, Holy Angels drew an interference penalty and Kennedy’s Gelecinskyj scored the power play goal to put the Eagles up 5-2.  The Stars Collin Lynch scored a power goal in the final minute of play to end the scoring 5-3.  After a cleanly skated first period, the teams struggled playing 5-on-4 hockey in 16 of the final 34 minutes as a result of penalties.

Jory McWilliams' shot hits the back of the net and pops out before players and ref can react. This score put Kennedy up 1-0.

Holy Angels will play in the Section 6AA playoffs in February.  Section 6AA includes the team playing the beat hockey in the state in December, Benilde-St. Margaret’s.  Also in Section 6AA are Wayzata and Edina, both tough teams.  But the Angels are in the mix in the middle of the 6AA rankings with a surprising St. Louis Park (5-1-0) and a surprisingly poor early season performing Cretin-Derham Hall (3-6-0).  Section 6AA will have an interesting playoff.  Holy Angels plays St. Paul Johnson Wednesday.  After years of struggling, East Side hockey is making a comeback with Johnson posting a 7-2 this season.  Johnson beat Minneapolis 6-1 and South St. Paul 6-1 in their last two games.  Holy Angels will be the underdog at Phalen Wednesday.  In a scheduling quirk, the Stars will play Cretin and St. Louis Park over the holidays.  That will sort out some things in Section 2A for Kennedy and in 6AA for Holy Angels.

The two victories over Holy Angels strengthen Kennedy’s position in the Section 2A rankings.  It also gives the Eagles a 6-4 record approaching the halfway mark of the season.  Kennedy’s problem is that three of those four games lost have been to Section 2A foes (Minneapolis, Delano, and Orono).  Delano and Orono won this weekend, Minneapolis lost.  Kennedy plays Mound/Westonka Tuesday in another Section 2A game that will count in February.  The Eagles should beat the White Hawks.  After Christmas, Kennedy plays in the Schwan Cup Bronze Tourney and draw Eastridge in the quarterfinal game.  Eastridge lost their first four games of the season, but are 3-2 in the last five including beating White Bear Lake Saturday 3-1.  The Eagles/Raptors are bracketed with Hopkins and Rogers in the tourney and will play one of the two Royals in their second game win or lose.

Burnsville beat Apple Valley 6-1

There are two ways to look at this game.  Burnsville fires back beating Apple Valley 6-1 after losing a tough game to Prior Lake Thursday is one view.  Another view is an injury riddled Apple Valley struggles losing their third game in a row after a good opening season start.  Both perspectives are true.  But settings views aside, the Eagles competed.  They hung in for the first half of the game trailing 2-1 with nine minutes to go in the second period.  The Blaze’s Eric Otto scored first three minutes into the opening period.  Sophomore Robbie Wedan got the second score.  The Eagles offense struggled in the opening period as the Blaze outshot them 14-4.  Apple Valley cut the lead to 2-1 six minutes into the second period.  The Eagles Branden Penz scored a power play goal.  At that point, the Blaze offense went into high gear.  Skating regular lines, Cade Borchardt and Ryan Brunner each scored two minutes apart in the middle of the period to break the game open.  The second period ended with Burnsville leading 4-1.  Valley was outshot in the second period 14-3.  A quick opening goal in the first 30 seconds of the third by Borchardt put the Blaze up 5-1 and the game out of the Eagles’ reach.  The Blaze won 6-1 outshooting the Eagles 34-10.  Burnsville rolled their lines and their defense held the Eagle forwards to only 10 shots on net.  Not unexpected since injuries had forced changes to the Eagles top two lines.

Apple Valley plays Rosemount Wednesday before traveling to Duluth to play in the Heritage Classic.  Their first tourney game is against Eau Claire Memorial (WI).  The Old Abes are one of the top ranked teams in Wisconsin.  They are tied with Hudson for the lead in the Two Rivers Conference.  Eau Claire’s one loss this was to New Richmond 4-0 early in the season.  New Richmond had just lost to St. Paul Johnson 2-1 before playing Eau Claire.  Apple Valley is bracketed with St. Paul Academy and Mankato WestHudson (WI) and St. Louis Park are in the other bracket.  This tourney will be good test for the Eagles if they are healthy.

Apple Valley Senior goalie Ben Savard has been the anchor in an improving Apple Valley defense.

Ben Savard uses his shoulder to deflect his shot by Burnsville's Jake Thomas just past the upper left corner of the Apple Valley goal.

Burnsville plays in the Schwan Gold Cup at Ridder over the holidays.  They draw Eden Prairie who beat Edina 6-4 Saturday night in the Edina Invitational in their quarterfinal game.  Wayzata and Hill-Murray play in the other bracket game.  Minnetonka/Centennial and St. Thomas Academy/Edina play in the lower bracket.  The Blaze will have their hands full after Christmas.  But things will not be much easier for the Blaze this week.  They make a return trip to the Apple Valley Sports Arena, this time to play Eastview in a key South Suburban Conference game.  The Blaze, Eastview, Lakeville North, and Farmington are in a battle chasing Prior Lake for the South Suburban title.

Burnsville's Robbie Wedan dives to rap the bouncing puck into the net off this Cade Borchardt shot put the Blaze up 6-1 in the third period of their game against Apple Valley.

Elk River-6 Grand Rapids-2

Grand Rapids and Elk River tangled in their third game of the Edina Holiday Classic played at Braemar Saturday evening.  The Thunderhawks had beaten Edina 6-4 and lost to Eden Prairie 6-3 in their two previous games.  The Elks had lost twice to Eden Prairie 5-2 and to Edina 4-0.  The Elks had three seniors on the ice in Saturday’s game.  Elk River is dominated by juniors and sophomores this season.  The one Elk ninth grader, Jack Perbix, centered the Elks #2 line out.  Grand Rapids has a power house line with Jonah Bischoff centering Mitchell Mattson and Alex Adams.  But Saturday that line misfired.  The Rapids #2 line out centered by Blake McLaughlin with wings Micah Miller and Gavin Hain had a better game.

The game was tied 1-1 early in the second period when the Elks scored twice to take a 3-1 lead into the third period.  The Elks’ Max Michaelis scored off a melee in front of the Grand Rapids net when the rebounding puck ended up at the top of the crease.  Michaelis top shelved the puck for a 2-1 Elks lead.  Less than 30 seconds later, an Elk forward popped the puck high from inside the Elk’s zone dropping the puck in front of a breaking Jenson Zerban for a solo rush on Elk’s goalie Ben Meyers.  Zerban beat Meyers on the right side for the score putting Elk River up 3-1 going into the third period.  A five minute major was called on Grand Rapids in the opening minutes of the third period.  For the next two and a half minutes, the Elks controlled the puck on the power play inside the Rapids zone.  They worked the puck to the center blue line and screened the goalie left leaving a narrow area open on the right side for the score and a 4-1 lead.  The Elks added a fifth goal shortly after the major penalty ended.  Late in the third period, Grand Rapids Gavin Hain cleared the defense on a solo rush in the right slot and beat Meyers with a hard shot to the left upper corner to end the scoring 6-2.  The Rapids lines just could not connect on their passes on rushes.  Their #1 line out struggled the most because they let the Elk River defenders initiate contact first going for the puck or for position on the pass.  The Rapid’s frustration cost them in penalties.

On this play Gavin Hain (#8) passes to Blake McLaughlin (#7) who has passed to Micah Miller (#20) in the slot. Despite the Elk defense scrambling, Rapids did not get a shot off.

This rebound skips off Elk River goalie Ben Meyers and beyond the reach of Rapids' Alex Adams (#9).

Gavin Hain scores this goal for Grand Rapids in their 6-2 loss to Elk River. The next battle between these two teams will likely be Feb 25 2016

Elk River win over Grand Rapids was timely from a Section 7AA perspective.  It should solidify the Elks as #1 in Section 7AA rankings.  The Elks have only four sectional games on their schedule.  Besides Grand Rapids, they have two games with Andover and one with Duluth East.  But the Elks have a tough game Tuesday and a tough Sports Authority Holiday tourney at St. Louis Park’s Rec Center.  Between Christmas and New Year’s, the Elks will play Prior Lake, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, and Lakeville North.  After the holidays, Elk River play mostly Northwest Suburban Conference games.  The chase for that conference title opened up when Anoka upset Blaine 6-3 Saturday.  Anoka won on a comeback led by Isaac Johnson (1 goal/3 assists).

Grand Rapids is 6-4-1 and nearing the halfway point of their season.  Ten of their next fourteen games are at home, a place they rarely lose (Benilde-St. Margaret’s beat them 4-3 early in the season).  They will be tough to beat the rest of the season especially as their top lines start to roll.  The Thunderhawks are off for the next ten days before hosting Forest Lake and Brainerd December 29th and 30th.  The Rapids travel to Hibbing in mid-January, not far up Highway 169, to play Scott Perunovich and unbeaten Hibbing.  Things in Section 7A and 7AA are heating up.

The scoreboard says it all from the Edina bench as the game gets tense in the third period.

Eden Prairie beats Edina 6-4

Edina and Eden Prairie have become hockey rivals and that rivalry is slowly replacing the Edina/Wayzata rivalry as #1 in Lake Conference hockey.  The two teams battle each other at least three times a year meeting twice in conference play and once in the Edina Holiday Classic.  Both teams covet meeting a fourth time for the ticket to the Xcel in sectional playoffs, but not this year.  Edina has slipped the bonds of Section 2AA play for Section 6AA returning to battle Wayzata for the 6AA ticket to the Xcel.  Eden Prairie remained in Section 2AA to contend with Prior Lake, Minnetonka, and Holy Family Catholic.  Saturday night the final game of the Edina’s holiday tourney turned into an emotional battle full of ups and downs for both teams.

Eden Prairie took a 2-0 lead in the first period.  With six minutes gone in the opening period, Edina drew a penalty and Eden Prairie’s power play took control of play in the Edina zone.  The Edina penalty killers held the Eagles forcing the puck wide until Eden Prairie winger Cole Lawrence fed Hunter Johannes alone in the slot.  Johannes buried the one-timer beating Edina goalie Charlie deGrood to put EP up 1-0.  Three minutes later, Michael Graham won the race to the puck in the Edina zone, cut to the slot, and beat the Edina goalie again to put the Eagles up 2-0 with five minutes to go in the period.  Edina struck twice to tie the game in the last three minutes of the period.  Edina’s Ben Copland scored when the puck took a weird bounce left on an Edina rush to Copland at the left crease.  Copland scored to cut EP’s lead to 2-1.  With less than 30 seconds left in the period, Bram Scheerer scored on a shot from the right side in the low face off circle that EP goalie Nick Wiencek high on the left side to tie the game 2-2.  The Eagles outshot the Hornets 11-7 in the first period.

Michael Graham's (#16) scores to put the Eagles up 2-0 in the first period.

..Graham's shot is on the way. It can be seen between the Edina's goalie Charlie deGrood and Edina center Sam Walker

Graham's shot hits the back of the net to put the Eagles up 4-3. Note only Mac Hankinson (#9) has been able to follow the puck on Graham's shot.

Eden Prairie-Edina Period 2

The second period opened with a Hornet interference penalty.  Again, the EP power play got pressure on Edina, but could not get the tie breaking goal.  The game opened up with both teams skating end-to-end, except Edina never got a shot on goal.  In the first eight minutes of play, the Hornets’ rush was there.  But Edina could not find the net until under pressue at the nine minute mark they cleared their zone with the puck ending up on Wiencek’s stick in the goal.  With four minutes to go in the period, EP’s Casey Mittelstadt scored on weird shot that may have been deflected to put the Eagles up 3-2.  His shot broke the tie.  It was Eden Prairie’s turn to draw a penalty at the opening of a period.  Four minutes into the third period, the Hornets went on the power play.  Edina got possession of the puck in the Eagles’ zone and put a shot on goalie Wiencek.  Wiencek made the initial save but the puck ended up loose among skates in the right slot where the Hornet’s Copeland gained control and snapped a shot off beating Wiencek and the left side to tie the game 3-3 with a power play score.

Eden Prairie-Edina Period 3

Eden Prairie drew another penalty a minute after Edina scored the tying goal, but weathered the Hornet swarm with Wiencek playing strong in the net killing the penalty.  Back to 5-on-5 hockey, it was all Eden Prairie.  For the next minute, the Eagles attacked the Hornet goal until a puck rebounded to Michael Graham in the slot.  Graham had a second or two to set his sights and buried the puck firing it past a Hornet defender into the net.  The Eagles led 4-3.  The score game with eight minutes left to play.  Two minutes later, the Eagles Nolan Sullivan scored a power play goal and a minute later Eden Prairie’s Jarod Blackowiak scored on a solo shot to ice the game.  EP led 6-3 with three minutes to play.  Edina’s Casey Dornbach scored with a minute left to make the final score 6-4.

Edina plays Blaine this Wednesday at Fogerty.  Neither team will be in a good mood with both teams coming off of losses.  Edina plays St. Louis Park next Saturday in a Section 6AA game.  After playing Blaine, the Hornets play in the Schwan Gold Cup at Ridder Arena drawing St. Thomas Academy in the opener.  The Hornets are bracketed with Minnetonka/Centennial.  The St. Louis Park game this Saturday is a Section 6AA game and one of the Hornets eight section games this season.  The Hornets’ 6AA record is 1-1 so far this season and unless Benilde-St. Margaret’s fall (the Red Knights are 9-0-0), the Hornets and Wayzata are on a path to meet in the Section 6AA semifinals.

Eden Prairie lost to Benilde 6-5 the week before winning the three Edina tourney games. Wednesday they head to Fogerty to play Blaine.  Their defense will have their hands full handling Luke Notermann and Riley Tufte.  After playing Blaine, the Eagles also play in the Schwan Gold Cup drawing Burnsville.  The 7-1-0 Eagles are in the upper bracket and Edina is in the lower bracket.  The two teams could play again in the finals a week from this Wednesday.  The two other teams in the upper bracket of the Gold Tourney are Minnetonka and Hill-Murray.  Eden Prairie will have one more shot at Benilde-St. Margaret’s in early February that could determine the #1 seed for both teams in their sections.

Notes

1.Ely’s Select Goalie: The Timberwolves goalie, Lori Huseby, made Minnesota Hockey’s HP-16 festival last summer as part of the Section 7A/AA team but was not taken for the Final 54 which was a mystery.  Her play at the festival was very good; she was much faster than those taken in the Final 54.  Her reaction to shots was so fast that she had to slow down on her saves.  It must have been like seeing fastballs all season and change ups in the summer.  Junior Huseby has several D1 colleges interested in her.

2. Two Wolves and One Scot: Ely’s junior Jon Wenzel is a “pocket battleship” on the ice and will be interesting to watch next season.  He is good size and strong with a hard deceptively quick shot.  Another player to watch as he matures is Wolves’ freshman Nick Mattila.  Mattila plays hard and has the knack to succeed.  Highland Parks’ sophomore Billy Wengler played a rugged wing low in the post in their game against Ely.  Wengler’s three goals against the Wolves makes him the leading Scott scorer with 11 goals/13 points.

3. Scots Top Line: Highland’s top line of Billy Wengler, Charlie Sutmar, and Gabe Nelson had a good game against Ely.  The Highland Park trio has scored 18 goals in 10 games, but the Scotts still struggle this season posting a 2-7-1 record.

4. Chaska’s leading scorer; A defenseman leading a team in scoring is somewhat rare and those that do like Hibbing’s Scott Perunovich often are also juniors or seniors and leaders in assists.  What makes Chaska’s leadng scorer Mike Koster different is that he is a ninth grader and leads his team in goals scored (12 in 11 games)

5. Top prospects for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Those players born before September 15th, 1998 are eligible for the 2016 draft.  The born after January 1, 1996 are also eligible, but the draft always concentrates on players born between the September 15th the previous September 15th date.  That is the new crop of players.  This season, the following Minnesota players are considered prospects for the 2016 draft.  All their birthdates with few exceptions fall between the two September 15th dates.  At forward, Joey Anderson/Hill-Murray-USA U18, Keiffer Bellows/Edina-USA U18, Michael Graham/Eden Prairie, Mitchell Mattson/Grand Rapids, Garrett Wait/Edina-Sioux City USHL, Matthew Freytag/Wayzata-University of Wisconsin, and Max Zimmer/Wayzata-Chicago Steel are on the top 240 forwards list for the 2016 NHL draft.  Bellows, Wait, Freytag, and Zimmer were all YHH Top 50 picks as peewees.  Defensemen Ryan Lindgren/USA U18-Lakeville, Sam Rossini/Waterloo USHL-Burnsville are on the top 30 defensemen list.  Goalie Ryan Edquist/Madison Capitals-Lakeville North is on the Top 30 list.  Bellows, Wait, Freytag, Zimmer, and Lindgren were YHH Top 50 picks as peewee.

6. Top prospects for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft:  The top prospects for the 2017 draft has a year to go, but here are some of the top Minnesota players being listed early: Grant Mishmash/USA U17-Edina, Casey Mittlestadt/Eden Prairie, Austin Pratt/Red Deer Reds-Lakeville South, Scott Reedy/USA U17-Prior Lake, Ryan Poehling/Lakeville North; goalies Jake Oettinger/USA U18-Farmington and Dayton Rasmussen/Waterloo-Eden Prairie.  All of these players were YHH Top 50 picks.  Most of these players and their exploits from peewees through bantams and high school can be ready in our archives.

7. Richfield’s Rink-The Richfield Rink is the home for the Minnesota Magicans, Holy Angels, and Bloomington Kennedy.  Though Kennedy is used in this YHH posting, Kennedy is really a combination of East Bloomington (think Mall of America) and Richfield.

8. Is “saving” a sign of a good high school coach: When a high school coach puts together a line like Elk River’s ninth grader Jack Perbix centering sophomore Connor Bizal and senior Al Schwab, it reflects two things in the Elk’s bench-they are looking at the talent they have this year and they are out to win.  Next year is next year.  That is good for the school and good for the Elks program.  When a coach drops seniors (sometimes to junior varsity) to maximize ice time for undergraduate players he is banking on a future that will likely never happen.
