Andover Huskies, Squirt A Champs of Eden Prairie Tournament
The Andover Huskies came into the Eden Prairie Squirt tournament a team on a mission. They had won the Forest Lake tournament over Thanksgiving and were undefeated in District 10 play. In pool play, the Huskies crushed the competition winning their three games by a combined score of 28-2. In the semi-finals Sunday morning they faced host Eden Prairie who snuck into the final four on a tiebreaker.
The first half of the game looked much of the same for the Huskies, they cruised to a 4-0 lead after the first and were carrying the play. Down by a bunch, Eden Prairie started to make things interesting, cutting the lead to three late in the second at 5-2. With 13 seconds left in the second, an Eden Prairie forward shot a puck toward the Andover net that deflect off of a stick past the Andover goalie into the net! After two it was 5-3, but all of the momentum was pointed toward EP.

In the third, the Eagles defended home ice and scored three goals to take the lead 6-5. Within a 25 minute span, the Huskies went from staring at Woodbury in the final to the third place game. Enter Gavyn Thoreson to the rescue. The Andover forward took over the game late. With under two minutes to go, Thoreson took the puck end-to-end on one of his many rushes. He made a great move on the hash mark and got the puck to the net. Once there, the puck bounced, dribbled and ping-ponged in the crease until finally it went in. Thoreson was given credit for the goal and the game was tied with 1:22 to go.
With just a few ticks on the clock, Eden Prairie was called for a mysterious Interference call which meant the Huskies would play the overtime on the power play. The penalty call even had the Andover fans musing under their breath, "let the kids play."
In the overtime, Andover controlled the play with standouts Thoreson and Cooper Conway (a common theme all weekend). Thoreson got a puck down low with a lot of time and space skating four on three and lit the lamp to give the Huskies the win. The shot was amazing...he beat the goalie top shelf on the short-side to lift them to the win.

The Predators had a similar path in winning three pool play games over Minneapolis, Shakopee and Buffalo. Missing star forward Atilla Lippai for the weekend, the Preds were still good enough to beat Minnetonka 6-3 in the semifinals.
Just like the rest of their games, the Huskies got of to a fast start - Thomas Fitzgerald scored on a pretty snipe that beat Woodbury goalie Kamdon Carlson. and a minute later, Husky spark plug Caden Martin stuffed home a wrap around to give Andover a 2-0 lead. Without Lippai, the Predators didn't get a lot of great chances.
In the second, Cooper Conway found Thoreson and he fed him with a pretty 60 foot pass and the third year Squirt, Thoreson, hammered it home to give the Huskies a lead they would never let go. The Huskies kept their foot on the gas and won going away 5-0 to take home the coveted Eden Prairie eagle trophy.
