Josh Howieson scores for Brainerd Tuesday night
Eric Stout's overtime goal gave Brainerd a 4-3 win over Section 8AA rival Moorhead Tuesday night at Essentia Health Sport Center. The Warriors took advantage of a slow Moorhead start building a two goal lead and then relied on solid goaltending of Brady Mick to hold off Moorheads comeback bid.
Brainerd got things going early when Josh Howieson slammed home a cross-ice pass from Jack Evans just 1:22 in. After several minutes of back and forth sloppy play Cole Ball found the back of the net to put the Warriors up 2-0. Moorhead's Matt Herbranson quieted the Brainerd crowd lighting the lamp cutting the Warrior lead to 2-1. Both teams aggressive play created some wild first period chances and Jack Evans goal late in the period gave the Warriors a 3-1 lead after the first. The Sophomore forward is now third on the team in points with 14 points.

Brainerd started the second period on a five minute power play as Moorhead's Jack Fahrendorf was assessed a penalty at the end of the first period. The Warriors were unable to take advantage of the opportunity, in fact they had to rely on goalie Brady Mick to stop a Spud break away attempt to preserve the two goal lead. Mick finished the game with 36 saves. Brainerd was unsuccessful on three more power plays during the period and the second period ended scoreless with Brainerd leading 3-1.
Moorhead used the momentum it gained during the second to start the third period fast. Cooper Tietz was able to slam the puck past Mick 47 seconds into the third and the Spuds comeback bid was on. Moorhead dominated play after Tietz's goal and tied the game when Patrick O'Connor scored on a rebound midway through the period. Brainerd almost won it in the final minute when Eric Ball was denied on a great scoring chance by Easton Masseth forcing OT.

Ball made a perfect pass to Stout in the slot and he buried a wrist shot giving Brainerd a 4-3 win over section 8AA foe Moorhead after being out shot 39-17. The game was a big section seeding win for the Warriors likely lifting them above the Spuds come playoff time.
