Edina White beat Chaska Chanhassen Sunday at Braemar Ice Arena to claim the Edina Invite title. The Hornets got a late goal by Charlie Hoch with 36 seconds left to lift them to the victory.
Chaska Chan got on the board first when big man Daniel Block beat Uma Corniea top shelf on a mini-breakaway midway through the first period. Edina would get an equalizer late in the first, but have it disallowed by the officials....end of one the Stormhawks lead 1-0.
Daniel Block scored for CC Sunday
Early in the second, Eddie Sandven scorched a wrist shot from 30 feet out to beat CC goalie Carter Wishart to tie the score at 1-1. Both teams would get their chances to take the lead...some traditional and some pretty whacky. One Edina chance came on a CC powerplay, an innocent dump in shot took a funny bounce and hand cuffed Wishart for a near miss and then a rebound attempt by the Hornet forechecker went wide of the net by an inch or two. After two the score was tied at 1-1.
Charlie Hoch scores to lift Hornets to title
In the third, both teams pressured...but both goalies, Corniea and Wishart made some solid saves. The entire third period had the feeling of a next goal wins. Finding the next goal was a tough task for both teams. Both teams have some big and skilled defensemen and great goaltending. Late in third, Edina's top scorer in the tournament, Charlie Hoch got himself loose for a breakaway. As he approached the net a CC defenseman chased. After Hoch shot the puck he barreled into Wishart and the puck found the back of the net to lift the Hornets to the championship.
