Number 1AA Red Knights late third period assault beats Cadets 5-3

Luke Horton celebrates after his end to end goal Tuesday night

No. 1AA Benilde St. Margaret's beat No. 10AA St. Thomas Academy Tuesday night in St. Louis Park to extend their unbeaten streak to 14 games. Jacob Holmers lead the Red Knights with two goals and an assist. After blowing a 3-1 lead in the third period, the Red Knights powered past the Cadets with two goals, one by senior Cade Gleekel and the other by Holmers to give them the win. "I am probably the unhappiest undefeated coach there is," said Ken Pauly, Benilde's head coach.

Payton Matsui scores one of his two goals Tuesday night

The Knights jumped out early when Auggie Moore scored six minutes into the game. The senior center returned Tuesday after missing extended time due to injury. Late in the first, freshman phenom Robert Christy scored for the Cadets on a quick shot off of the face off, his fifth goal in seven games since being called up from the junior varsity.

The Knights came out flying in the second scored two goals, one by Luke Horton and another by Holmers. Horton's goal was on an end-to-end burst that caught the Cadets off guard (or napping) and beat St. Thomas Academy goalie Vinny Capezza on a pretty Mikko Koivu-style backhand top shelf goal. The Cadets got a goal on a loose puck backhand by sophomore Payton Matsui to cut the lead to 3-2 at the second period intermission.

The game got interesting in the third when Benilde got into penalty trouble when Jerry Calengor and Auggie Moore were called for penalties 30 seconds apart. Matsui got his second of the night on a pretty back-door feed from senior Billy Jerry to tie the game. After the Matsui goal, STA took a time out to try to cash in on the minute of power play time that remained on Moore's penalty. The Knights killed it off and were able to get a back breaking game winning goal by Gleekel a minute later. Gleekel grabbed a rebound on the short side and slid it past Capezza to give his team the lead. Holmers finished off Cadets when he got a loose puck in front and beat a sprawling Capezza to seal the game and the unbeaten streak.

Not the prettiest win for the No. 1 team in Minnesota, but they found a way to win. Tuesday they beat their fifth projected number one seed of the season (2/Eden Prairie, 3/STA, 4/Hill Murray, 5/Blaine, 7/Elk River). Despite the big win, Pauly was not clicking his heals, "we have to play selfless hockey to be good, tonight we were a little too selfish for my liking," said Pauly.
