Minnetonka Blue are the Champions!

Every year, Anoka hosts a 16-team peewee B2 tourney.  The tourney has been popular and has continued to draw better and better teams.  Seven top teams from six of the twelve Minnesota Hockey Districts entered this year’s Anoka Classic Peewee B2 tourney.  The top teams made this the best peewee B2 tourney of the 2015-2016 season.  Since there is no Minnesota state tourney for the peewee B2 teams, no regional play down, this year’s Anoka Classic Tourney came the closest to filling the vacancy.  That creates a state tourney atmosphere.  The Peewee B2 championship was played Sunday evening between Minnetonka Blue (District 6) and Apple Valley (District 8).  The Skippers won beating the Eagles 3-0.  There is no doubt, from this view, the best peewee B2 team in the state this year goes to the Minnetonka Blue.

Minnetonka Blue Bret Worley scores his second goal in the Skippers' 3-0 win over Apple Valley in the Classic Peewee B2 Championship game.

The Anoka Classic Peewee B2 Field

The Anoka Area Hockey Association, the Anoka Classic tourney sponsors, puts its teams into District 10 for regular and post season play.  This year the Anoka Association has fielded a peewee A, a peewee B1, and a peewee B2 team.  Each team is hosted a peewee tourney this past week as part of the Anoka Classic Tournament.  The Anoka Association have been running this tourney for at least the past 30 years and for at least the past 10 years, the Classic has featured a 16 team peewee B2 tourney.  This year is no different.

The 2016 Classic Peewee B2 tourney had teams from seven Minnesota districts entered.  Five teams came from the host’s District 10 Peewee B2 league (Anoka, Coon Rapids, Rogers Blue, Andover, and Spring Lake Park).  Rogers Blue is currently leading the 18 team D10 Peewee B2 league.  The Royals hold a two point lead over Becker-Big Lake and Elk River for the league title.  Andover, Spring Lake Park, and Coon Rapids are currently in the middle of the D10 standings and are separated by two points.  Anoka is struggling in league play.

Four teams from District 8 were entered (Rosemount Green, Cottage Grove Black, Apple Valley, and Eastview White).  Apple Valley and Rosemount Green are currently tied for the B2 title.  Both teams are unbeaten in league play.  Eastview White and Cottage Grove Black are in the middle of the District 8 peewee B2 standings.  Two teams entered (Stillwater Red and Tartan) play in District 2’s peewee B2 league.  Stillwater Red is contending for the D2 regular season title currently in fourth place.  The Red still have a three more games to play (or to report) than current leader Forest Lake.  Tartan always a dangerous team has played some good games, but trail Stillwater.  The Titans are currently in the bottom half of the league standings.  District 6 (Minnetonka Blue), District 5 (Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake or MAML), District 3 (OMG Crimson), and District 15 (Moorhead Black) each have one team entered to complete the field.  Minnetonka Blue is a dangerous fifth place team in District 6’s peewee B2 league trailing three Edina teams (Gold, Green, and White) and league leading Minnetonka Black.  The Blue won the Duluth Tourney at the end of November beating Edina Gold 5-3.  MAML is currently in the middle of District 5’s Peewee B Blue Division.  OMG Crimson is contending for District 3’s Peewee B2 title.  The Crimson have lost just one league game (to Wayzata Yellow 1-0).  District 15 has no peewee B2 league this season.  Moorhead Black has played an independent schedule playing North Dakota teams and a mix of teams from North Dakota’s Peewee B leagues and Minnesota teams.  After a slow start that included a 7-3 loss to Rogers, the Black had strung a four game winning streak together before playing at Anoka.

The Peewee B2 tourney format is a straight bracket with the 16 teams playing eight games in the opening round, four played on Thursday and four on Friday.  Saturday the quarterfinal and consolation quarterfinal rounds were played.  Sunday, the championship semifinal and championship games were played.

Friday, two tough teams from D8 and D3 played a solid defensive game.  Apple Valley edged the OMG Crimson 3-2.  The tight game indicates both leagues are strong this year.  Apple Valley took a 2-1 lead in the first period behind two goals by the Eagles’ Nick HoodEmmett McIntosh assisted on Hood’s first goal.  The Crimson’s Noah Lindberg scored in the second period to tie the game 2-2.  Valley’s Adam Wiggins scored the game winner halfway through the third period.  Wiggins was part of an Eagles’ rush along the right boards.  He came in low and poked a rebounding puck past the Crimson goalie for the 3-2 win.  Devin Britt got the assist.

Championship Sunday

The Anoka Tourney Peewee B2 championship round was played Sunday afternoon.  The first semifinal game matched Minnetonka Blue against Rosemount Green.  It was a game between two top teams from District 6 and District 8.  The second match-up with between another top District 8 team Apple Valley and a tough District 2 team Tartan.

Minnetonka scored three quick first period goals and added a four goal in the opening minutes of the second period to beat Rosemount 4-0.  First period Skipper goals were scored by Nick Bear (Brooks Witta assist),  Jeff Schneck (unassisted), and Connor Ward (Harrison Odom).  Jack Lewin scored the only second period.  Rosemount goalie Andrew Murphy played tough in the nets after the initial Skipper blitz.

Tartan and Apple Valley played an exciting game with the Eagles edging the Titans 3-2 scoring an overtime goal.  Power plays factored into this game.  Three goals were scored on the power play.  Apple Valley led 1-0 after two periods.  Emmett McIntosh scored late in the first period with Hudson Hatfield and Matthew Cobb getting the assists.  Valley led 1-0 going into the third period, but the nine forwards on the bench were tiring.

The third period opened with Valley drawing two successive penalties.  The Eagles penalty kill stopped the Tartan power on the first penalty.  Tartan scored on the second.  Alex Bearth got the score with Logan Headrick and Lucas Mason got the assists.  Valley’s McIntosh scored again with two minutes left to play.  This time the Titans drew the penalty.  McIntosh scored the power goal put the Eagles up 2-1 with two minutes left to play.

Tartan pulled their goalie and scored with less than a minute left to play.  The Titans established control in the Eagles zone and moved the puck to the right of the Eagles goal to Mason.  Mason made a quick pass to Donovan O’Malley alone on th weak side for the tying score.  Mason and Bearth got the assists.  As the final period wound down and headed to overtime, Tartan drew a penalty.  There were 20 seconds left on the clock.

The penalty carried over to the 4-on-4 over time giving the Eagles a 4-on-3 advantage for over minute in the five minute period.  The Eagles’ McIntosh took advantage and beat a lone Titan defender on a solo rush.  He scored the power play winner beating the goalie on a quick move to the left.  Adam Wiggins and Hatfield Hudson got the assists.  It was the third goal scored by McIntosh.  He got the hat trick.

Apple Valley's Emmett McIntosh scores the game winner in the Eagles' 3-2 overtime win over Tartan

The championship game matched teams from two tough districts.  District 6 (Minnetonka Blue) played District 8 (Apple Valley).  The two best teams from the best districts playing for the title equal a state championship.  And it was a great game as both teams played to win.  Valley forwards maintained their poise and passed the puck well to offset playing against a bigger stronger team with one more line.  The two teams battled evenly with Valley able to move the puck low, but not able to get off good shots on the Skipper net.  The Skipper got pressure in the Valley zone that the Eagle defense was able to contain.  In the end the game decided on two plays, both by the Skippers’ Bret Worley.  Worley took off in the first period and beat the Eagles defense scoring on a solo shot to put the Skippers up 1-0.  Halfway through period two, Worley took off again for a second solo score to put the Skippers up 2-0.  Valley came out strong in the third period as both teams revved up their play.  For most of the third period the two teams battled.  Valley would get the puck low through passing, Minnetonka Blue would quickly turn and attack the Valley net.  The play in the third period of the game was as good as the play in any peewee A game.  Minnetonka Blue won.  They added an empty net score late in the game to make the final score 3-0.

Minnetonka Blue is the 2016 Anoka Classic Peewee B2 champs and in this corner of YHH, the Skippers are the best peewee B2 team in the state or the peewee B2 state champions.

Celebrating a championship win.
