Blayde Pogreba scores one of his two goals Saturday for #2 JCNSP
Johnson Como North St. Paul beat Mankato Saturday 4-0 in a matchup of two top five teams in the state. The No. 2 ranked Polar Devils got two goals and an assist from Blayde Pogreba as they out-muscled and out skated the Mavericks at Polar Arena.
Pogreba got his first goal midway through the first period on a rebound to the left of Mankato goalie Jacob Arndt. The Polar Devils had a few more chances slip through their hands as Arndt came up big to keep the score 1-0 after 1.
Damian Cunningham scores for JCNSP Saturday at Polar Arena
The Mavs weren't able to shake off their bus legs in the second and JCNSP took advantage scoring three unanswered goals, all of the pretty variety. The first was a nice two-on-one goal, when Damian Cunningham converted a saucer pass from Kyle Gilday and the Polar Devils were now in command 2-0. A minute later, Pogreba got his second of the day when cruised up the near side of the ice and beat Arndt top shelf to give JCNSP a 3 rip lead. The final goal of the three goal barrage came when Joey Moberg got to open space in the Mankato zone and let go of a low rocket that beat a helpless Arndt through the five-hole to give the Polar Devils a 4-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
There was no scoring in the third, which was played in one hour without a resurface. Both teams traded chances, but both goalies came up big.
Wyant Folds, Mankato - big defenseman who carried the play on both sides of the ice for Mavs.
Layten Liffrig, Mankato - was held scoreless Saturday, but was very noticeable every time he got the puck.
AJ McMahon, JCNSP - looks to be over six feet tall and very skilled and comfortable with the puck on the blue line.
Joey Moberg, JCNSP - comes from a long line of great east-side hockey players, strong skater and a cannon for a shot.
Blayde Pogreba, JCNSP - stole the show Saturday with 2 goals...very disruptive forechecker that has a really high hockey IQ.
AJ McMahon, JCNSP
Regular season hockey winds down the next couple weeks. Neither of these teams have been challenged in district play and should find their way into the Regions come late February.
JCNSP will be slotted to the East Region in Cottage Grove where they could face teams like #1 Mound Westonka (who they lost to Saturday night at Mound) and #4 Mounds View Irondale.
Mankato is slated for the South Region in New Ulm where they will likely see #3 Edina and two of their friends from D6.
