Landon Langenbrunner scores for Cloquet Sunday in their title game against Moorhead
On Sunday, eight teams from their level punched a ticket to the state tournament. Some took the most direct route, others took the long way. Some even took an extra day to get there. By now, the tickets are punched the excitement for state is brewing.
Here is a look what happened at all the youth levels.
Rochester Bantam AA wins the West in St. Cloud
15A Rochester beats Tonka Sunday, Emma Schmitz scores all four goals to lead them to a 4-3 win...the game winner with 2 seconds left.
12A Centennial advances to state with exciting 6 OT win over Orono/Westonka.
12A Andover and Edina on collision course in Cottage Grove...saw Proctor Hermantown and OMG this year, those two could challenge.
15A Edina is the best team in the state, as long as they don't have to play North Wright County. The Riverhawks are the only team to have beaten them this year. Anoka was a solid team this past weekend at Fogarty.
Carter Beck from EGF wins it for the Green Wave Sunday
BAA 8 teams punch their ticket Sunday. Cloquet, EP, Tonka and Rochester get #1 seeds with nice wins. Tonka needed double OT in their quest for a repeat. Moorhead, Wayzata, Blaine and Elk River all had glorious Sunday afternoons getting the final four slots into the show. Wayzata beat Stillwater in an epic tilt at EP and Elk River knocked Edina out of state for the first time in a long time.
BA East Grand Forks, Burnsville, Orono and Greenway each got the number one seeds out of their region. EGF beat Alex in an epic OT game that saw the Green Wave take the lead with 24 seconds left in the game and then relinquish it with 14 to go. Carter Beck got the game winner to send the Wave to state. Edina, Virginia, MVI and Warroad all won Sunday afternoon.
BB Orono White, Brainerd Blue, Edina Green and Rogers represent the top seeds in the state tourney in Moorhead. Orono White may be the second hottest team in the state right now behind undefeated Brainerd, At this point, it seems no one can beat the Warriors...they rolled through regions. A team that seems to be right on the heals of Orono and Brainerd is #2 seed Rosemount. In an odd twist, the Irish may have an easier route to the state final then those two.
EP Bantam AA wins East Region Sunday
Park Cottage Grove wins it Sunday over Apple Valley
PWAA Prior Lake, Edina, Duluth East and Eden Prairie won their regions Sunday morning - the Lakers took out #1 Osseo Maple Grove Saturday in the biggest upset of the weekend 5-4 in Owatonna. The Leafbirds won their way back through the backdoor winning three straight. Other backdoor winners were Park Cottage Grove (over Apple Valley), Cloquet (over Roseau) and Elk River (over Lakeville South). Some say the state title will be won Friday afternoon when Edina and OMG face off in Grand Rapids.
PWA Mankato, JCNSP, North Branch and East Grand Forks each got a one seed with their big wins Sunday. All four will be tested on Friday in Coleraine by the two seeds. Alex, Edina and Mound are all teams we've seen a lot...all three can win the title this year. Mound was #1 most of the season. Don't overlook Denfeld, the Hunters have a lot of wins this year. The team that will likely be the toughest to beat will be JCNSP....they are big and very talented.
PWB This may be the most tourney of the bunch we will cover in a couple weeks in Moorhead. Just like the PWAA, #1 and #2 will face off in the first game at the Youth Rink in Moorhead. Edina White fell to arch rival Edina Green in Luverne Sunday but punched their ticket with a win over Tonka. They White Hornets will face OMG who won their Region. The other two #1s in Moorhead will be Hallock and Champlin, Hallock hasn't seen a metro team yet this year, can they beat three in a row? It also may be no shock to see both Edina teams on Sunday either.
Malory Schahn scores winning goal for Centennial as they punch their ticket to state in one of the most dramatic wins in region history
