Hermantown ends streak of 6 consecutive title losses

Hermantown goes crazy

The list of losses ring in the ears of coach Bruce Plante. Losses to private school teams, controversial losses in overtime.

2010: Breck > Hermantown (2-1)
2011: St. Thomas Academy > Hermantown (5-4, OT)
2012: St. Thomas Academy > Hermantown (5-1)
2013: St. Thomas Academy > Hermantown (5-4)
2014: East Grand Forks > Hermantown (7-3)
2015: East Grand Forks  > Hermantown (5-4, OT)

For fifty weeks out of the year he's a free wheeling fun guy. The type of many any parent would want to teach, coach and mentor their son. Come tourney time he gets a little tense. "Something about this time of year that drives me crazy, " said Plante. "I'm not sure what it is, probably coaching paranoia...I can't sleep at night."

On Saturday night, Bruce, the boys of present and past will sleep well. The Hermantown Hawks dispatched two private schools in consecutive days to win the class 1A title on Saturday at the X.

Ryan Sandelin had a goal and two assists to lead the Hawks in scoring, but Luke Olson was the hero in nets for the Hawks. He had two huge point blank saves in the first period that held the game scoreless. James Lindberg had the game's defining goal scoring on a top shelf laser with four seconds left in the first period to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead after one.

"I think those old people will give me a hug now," coach Plante said in reference to people who would ask him at the local grocery store about the streak.
