Justin Janicke's late goal lifts OMG to title

Osseo Maple Grove was crowned champions of PeeWee AA Sunday after a narrow 3-2 win over Duluth East. Justin Janicke stuffed home a game winning goal with just over three minutes left to give the Leafbirds the win. Cal Thomas had two goals for OMG and Wiz Wyatt POTY finalist Kyle Kukkonen had three assists including a pretty feed to Janicke on the game winner.

Their championship marks the second time Osseo Maple Grove won the top prize in PeeWees. The 1994-95 OMG team won state beating Elk River in Roseville.

After 59 games of hockey,  Osseo Maple Grove had only lost three. On Sunday they were given a stiff test by Duluth East. The Hounds had a 2-1 lead in the third period, but weren't able to close the deal on Sunday, but left a lasting impression on OMG and the rest of the state with their skill and hard work.

OMG finished the season 57-3-0 having won the Eden Prairie, Edina, and Roseau tournaments and taking second in the Big Pumpkin and the South Regional. Duluth East finished 30-15-8. They won their district and the North regional en route to taking second in Grand Rapids.

Hats off to both coaching staffs for a great year and many thanks for their commitment to the players in each community.
