Machine Black celebrates after a first period goal by Caleb Bendell

Tommy Chicago ties it in the third period on this goal

The Central States Selects beat Tommy Chicago Sunday 5-4 to claim the number three slot in the Summer Finale 2005 Invite bracket play. In what appeared just an average game after two periods ended with a flurry of goals and drama.

Central States lead 2-0 after one and 3-1 after two on a goal and an assist by Kayden Hawkins and appeared to be headed to their first win of the Finale. But Tommy woke up big time in the third getting back to back goals from Tanner Kronberg and Alex Gelhar to tie it midway through the frame. The two teams would trade goals to knot the score at 4-4 when Kronberg busted through the pack for Tommy for a game winning goal. He was dragged down and awarded a penalty shot. On his attempt he beat the goalie, but not the goal post.

With the score tied and needing a win to escape last place in pool play, Tommy coach Dean Weasler pulled his son Mac from the nets and played for the win. After sustaining good pressure on the Central States net, Sean Ryan cleared the puck out for CS right into the empty net for the win.

The 2005 Minnesota Blades beat the Machine Black 8-2 Saturday to wrap up Summer Finale pool with a 3-0 record. The Blades outscored their opponents 20-4 in three games and look to be a cinch to win the Finale Sunday afternoon in Eden Prairie.

They jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one on goals by Max Plante, Austin Burnevik and Kade Kohanski after the Machine was called for five penalties in the first stanza. In the second period, the Blades poured it on with four goals - the prettiest by Harper Searles who beat the Machine goalie short-side top shelf to stretch their lead to 7-1 after two.

The two teams traded goals in the third, Machine Black's Caleb Bendell and the Blades' Max Plante each got their second goals of the day.
