From Squirts to HS - Spuds take it to GR

Carter Randklev had the whole town on his side Saturday in Grand Rapids

It lined up for a nice day of hockey at the IRA Civic Center in Grand Rapids. Four games in a six hour span pitting Moorhead Squirt, PeeWee, Bantam and High School teams against host Grand Rapids. YHH made the trip to IRA, arguably one of the best rinks in the state to get a taste of how good hockey can be in this state.

We were not disappointed, two of the four games went to shootout, one was a one goal nail-biter and the main event had a mild upset. No complaints, the flavor was good - that is if you like potatoes. Moorhead won all four...including a 4-0 win for the high school team over the ninth ranked Thunderhawks.

Squirt A - With the score tied after two, Sam Laurila gave the Spuds the lead early in the third, but Gavin Forrest got the equalizer for the Hawks to send it to a shootout. Moorhead's Kian Hannestad - a hero in the YHH Squirtacular - did it again, winning it for the Spuds in the shootout.

PeeWee AA - Another exciting game took place in the PeeWee AA game. The home team jumped out to a 3-0 lead scoring three goals in a four minute span. The Spuds would respond with an even better run of goals. Sparked by a Gavin Lindberg hat trick, the Spuds scored five straight to grab a 5-3. The Hawks would put a scare into the visitors when Sam Sterle scored with the goalie pulled with under a minute left. Final score, Moorhead wins 5-4.

MHD: Lindberg 3G, Cody Martinson 1G/2A, Justin Stalboerger 1G/1A

Bantam AA - Much like the Squirts, the Bantams couldn't decide things in regulation. In fact, neither decided to score at all. After a scoreless game, a shootout was necessary, despite the urging from some Moorhead fans to just use shots on goal as a tiebreaker (sarcasm intended). In the shootout, Caden Triggs and Wyatt Gunkel both scored for the Spuds to net them the win.

Moorhead jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first on goals by Carter Randklev and Jack Stetz. YHH Bantam Player of the Year Ethan Frisch showed he's no longer a Bantam netting the final two goals for the Spuds...as they cruised past the host Thunderhawks 4-0. Missing Gavin Hain (North Dakota commit) for the whole game and Blake McLaughlin (Minnesota commit) for the first period, Grand Rapids was never able to muster an attack the whole game mounting only 18 shots on home ice. Junior Cole O'Connell finished the game with three assists for the Spuds.
