Champions Claim Their Independence

Another Sunday night in spring, and another evening spent surveying the last four days of competition.

The Lake Superior Stars managed to hold off the '04 MN Blades in the finals of the 2003 Division, edging the speedy upstarts 4-2 at Braemar Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Stars end the weekend as the only undefeated team in the 2003 Division with a record of 3-0-2 including a tie with the '04 Blades during Pool play.

In the 2004 Division, the Madison Capitols and the MN Steel took to the Olympic-sized ice in Plymouth, where speed and creativity reigned supreme. MN Steel managed a 3-1 victory in this border battle. The teams tied earlier in the tournament 2-2.

Playing up a level, the Blades took care of business in the 2005 Division, downing Velocity Black 3-1 in Blaine. The win avenged an earlier loss to Velocity for the Blades, as the teams skated a 6-4 game in the first contest of the tournament in the 2005 Division.

Skating to a 5-0-0 record and the 2006 crown were the MN Blades, who slipped past the Lake Superior Stars by a score of 5-3. The win, was powered by Will Zellers, who scored a Hatty and tacked on the insurance goal to end the Stars' comeback bid late in the third period.
