On (Team) Wisconsin

Less than four seconds proved to be more than enough for Team Wisconsin.

That's how long it took for Dayne Hoyord to lift his team to the CCM Invite 15U Division championship, edging the Osseo-Maple Grove Bantam AA squad 3-2 on Sunday evening in Orland Park (IL) in a teeter-totter tilt that had more (momentum) swings than an elementary school playground at recess.

A scoreless first period was dominated by Team Wisconsin, as the boys from the Badger state pumped 11 shots on Osseo-Maple Grove's Jack Wieneke. The Leafbirds for their part managed just one shot on Team Wisconsin's Patrick Buckley and spent most of the first frame scrambling in their own zone while trying to ward off shots from Team Wisconsin.

Despite no resurface to swipe its obvious groove, Team Wisconsin started the second period flatly, allowing the Leafbirds to put two goals on the board. The first game off of a deflection by Chris Kernan, who had parked himself in front of Buckley. Much like their first goal, the Leafbirds picked up the second score on another shot from the blue line. This time it was Henry Nelson's rocket that found the net, unencumbered by a fortunate tip or redirection.

Team Wisconsin would slice the Osseo-Maple Grove lead in half before the end of the second stanza, as Drew Lenz beat Wieneke with a deflection of his own.

Tyler Herzberg would tie the game in the third period, knotting the score at 2-2 with just six minutes to play in regulation. Osseo-Maple Grove called timeout with 42 ticks left on the clock, but by 0:38 of the period Team Wisconsin was up 3-2 thanks to Hoyord's goal.

A late barrage left Buckley unphased between Team Wisconsin's pipes, and the bulk of last year's Team Wisconsin Bantam Major roster that won the 2016 CCM Invite title skated away with another crown in the Land of Lincoln.

The loss ended an impressive run by Osseo-Maple Grove, which rattled off six wins against stiff competition before Sunday's finale.
