Cadets Attack Overwhelms Spuds

For St. Thomas Academy, scoring 11 goals over the course of two games would look a lot better had it not given up nine over that span.

“It’s really not what the doctor ordered,” Cadets’ co-head coach Tom Vanelli said after his team scored a 7-4 victory over Moorhead on Saturday night at Bloomington Ice Garden.

“I’d like to think we can keep the opposition under three,” Vanelli added.

Nine goals surrendered or not, the Cadets (1-1) rebounded nicely from Friday night’s loss to Minnetonka, getting goals from six different players and peppering Moorhead’s net with 34 shots.

“We have three solid lines,” junior forward Luke Herzog said after scoring two goals in the win.

“We have a lot of players that can put the puck in the net.”

The Cadets are currently ranked No. 5 in the latest Class 2A state coaches' poll.

Moorhead' Carter Randklev scores one of his three goals in Saturday night's loss to St. Thomas Academy.

In addition to an outsized offensive performance over the weekend, the Cadets saw two solid performances in net from junior Muzzy Donohue.

“(It) couldn’t have been a more difficult challenge, and he welcomed it,” Vanelli said of Donohue’s first two varsity appearances.

“He’s a cool goaltender,” Vanelli added. “He’s got a lot of poise.”

Donohue said that he knew he would start in place of the injured Atticus Kelly about a week before the start of the season.

“It looked like I was going to play about last week, so I’ve been preparing,” Donohue said before deferring his success to the play of his teammates.

“My team did a great job playing in front of me and blocking shots.”

Herzog credited his two goals to gritty play in the offensive zone.

“I was just grinding in the corners with my teammate Brendan McFadden, who I’ve been playing with since I was young,” Herzog explained.

After sitting out Friday night’s third period against Lakeville North, Moorhead senior forward Carter Randklev notched three goals in Saturday night’s loss for the Spuds (1-1).

Payton Matsui recorded a goal and an assist in the Cadets' win.
