Leafbirds Sneak Past Sabres

Deficits mean nothing to Osseo-Maple Grove.

The Leafbirds scored once in the second period and once again in the third to erase a 1-0 Shattuck-St. Mary's lead and earn a 2-1 win over Sabres on Wednesday night in Faribault.

Sabres' forward Luke Buss tallied a goal with 14:50 to play in the first period off a pass from Liam Gilmartin during a two-on-one rush, with Peter Reynolds burying a shot past Osseo-Maple Grove's Jack Wieneke.

Osseo-Maple Grove would struggle to sustain offensive pressure throughout the first frame, mustering only four shots on net in the period against the Sabres' nine.

The second period saw the Leafbirds tie the game on a goal by Grant Zick, while the team pumped 15 shots on net and held the Sabres in check. While Shattuck-St. Mary's managed 12 shots on goal, Wieneke clicked into focus and kicked out each attempt.

With just under eight minutes to play in the third period, Osseo-Maple Grove forward and Michigan Tech commit Kyle Kukkonen put the Leafbirds ahead, notching a shorthanded goal by suddenly stopping en route to the Sabre net and slipping the puck past Shattuck-St. Mary's netminder Tyler Krivtsov for the eventual game-winner.

Wieneke finished the game with 30 saves for the Leafbirds, playing just as key a role in the win as the goal-scoring tandem of Zick and Kukkonen.

This game marks the second time in five days the Sabres, ranked No. 12 in the country according to MyHockeyRankings, have lost to a Minnesota Bantam AA squad. Eden Prairie handed the Sabres a 3-1 defeat on Friday, Dec. 8.
