Youth Tournament Weekend: Friday

Updates from White Bear Lake's Moose Goheen and Stillwater's Skate for the Roses tournaments.

BAA: Moose Goheen

Entering Saturday's slate of games in the Moose Goheen's Bantam AA Division, Prior Lake, Wayzata, Osseo-Maple Grove, Duluth East, and Elk River stand with records of 2-0, earning wins in both games played on Friday. 

The Lakers held Rosemount to a single goal in a 4-1 win to start their day and managed to eke out a 4-2 win over Cloquet in the last game of the evening. Alex Bump scored twice for the Lakers in the win over Cloquet. In Wayzata's camp, the Trojans marched to wins over Hermantown by a score of 7-1 and a second victory over host White Bear Lake 5-2. Jake Schneider and Tucker Ness each scored two goals for the Trojans in the win over Hermantown.

Osseo-Maple Grove breezed to a pair of sizable victories on Friday, spanking Cloquet 9-2 and following that with another scoring outburst in a 9-1 win over Rosemount. The Greyhounds snuck past Stillwater 4-3 and concluded their day with a 6-1 romp over Edina. Elk River pulled off one-goal wins over White Bear Lake and Hermantown for its two victories, edging the Bears 4-3 and the Hawks 2-1.

PWAA: Moose Goheen

After the first day of competition, only Rogers and Andover have emerged from a loaded Peewee AA field with records of 2-0. 

The Royals trounced Hastings 7-1 and downed Rochester 5-2 to earn its spotless record, while the Huskies thumped Centennial 5-2 and pulled away late from Moorhead in the nightcap 7-4.

As for other teams that played twice on Friday, both White Bear Lake and Rochester went 1-1, as the Bears shut out Elk River 3-0 to open the tournament before falling to Duluth East 3-2. Rochester edged Wayzata 4-2 and fell to Rogers in the aforementioned 5-2 game on Friday night. Elk River and Moorhead as the two teams that finished Friday without a win in two games. The Elks went 0-1-1 after losing to White Bear Lake and tying Prior Lake, and the Spuds dropped games to Rosemount 5-4 and Andover 7-4.

10UA/12UA: Skate for the Roses

Head on out to the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center and you'll find something that may surprise you. 

The Skate for the Roses Tournament, including all girls' levels, is designed as a classic eight-team, three games per team, bracket-style tourney, with each team only playing once per day. 

In the 10UA Division, both sets of semifinal games are set. Stillwater will face Lakeville in the first semifinal on Saturday, as the Ponies thumped Centennial 7-1 and Lakeville snuck past Elk River 2-1. Woodbury and Andover will meet in the other semifinal, as Emily Pohl led the Predators to a 5-1 win over Cottage Grove and the Huskies extended their 36-game winning streak after dispatching Apple Valley/Burnsville 5-3.

Stillwater's 12UA team also skated to a 7-1 win in their quarterfinal matchup, cruising past Sibley behind four goals by Sammy Muetzel. The Ponies will match up against Cottage Grove, which skated past the Duluth Icebreakers by a score of 4-1. The second set of quarterfinal matchups will be played on Saturday morning as Andover takes on Minnetonka and Apple Valley/Burnsville faces Elk River.
