Bears take the Moose

In Squirt hockey, double-digit scores and running time are ways of life.

But when two teams commit to playing quality defense and feature a pair of strong starting goaltenders, Squirt games can take on the glorious seesaw nature that delights fans and players alike.

In the Moose Goheen Squirt A final, Edina White and White Bear Lake battled back-and-forth for five periods, with Camden Autrey lifting the Bears to a 3-2 win in the second overtime.

Sam Spehar opened the scoring with a goal for the Hornets in the final seconds of the first period, but Kellen Swanson answered for the Bears midway through the third to even the score at 1-1. Spehar scored his second goal of the game less than a minute later, seemingly putting the Hornets ahead for good.

With 7.7 seconds left on the clock, White Bear Lake's Kellen Beck knocked in a loose puck to force overtime, where after a scoreless first extra session came time for Autrey's heroics.

Goaltenders Carter McLeod of White Bear Lake and Oliver Scriver of Edina put on a show between the pipes, playing just as large a role in their team's success throughout the tournament as the goal-scorers.

Players to Watch

Ryder Betzold, Farmington - dazzling skater and puck moving forward. Uses his body well to win puck battles.

Owen Corkish, Cottage Grove - Fantastic hands and shooting accuracy. Has a nose for the net.

Aiden Grossklaus, Tartan - Great two-way player. Very unselfish when he possesses the puck.

Mason Jenson, Rogers - Breakaway speed and very unselfish...he and linemate Parker Deschene were involved in all five Rogers' goals Sunday against Cottage Grove.

Sam Spehar, Edina White - Great all-around player, one observer said of the speedy forward, "he plays like a coaches kid..." Right place, right time all the time.
