Elk River junior goaltender Nate Gfroerer is scheduled to undergo his second round of treatment for leukemia, a cancer of blood-forming tissues which hinder the body's ability to fight infection.
But first, Gfroerer had to suit up for his first varsity action with his Elks, which he did with the same calm, collected demeanor with which he faces his disease's resurgence.
Gfroerer turned away 17 shots to earn the shutout in a 7-0 win over Osseo on Wednesday night, putting an exclamation point on Elk River's Hockey Fights Cancer evening.
