BHS: Wednesday Night Section Finals

Game recaps of all section finals played on Wednesday night.

Section 1A

Mankato East 6, Rochester Lourdes 1

Matthew Salzle and Sam Schulz each scored twice as Mankato East skated past Rochester Lourdes in the Section 1A finals, sending the Cougars to their first state tournament since 2006. 

Garrett Rabenhorst and Adam Megard each scored once in the win for the No. 2 seed Cougars, with Luke Newman scoring the only goal in the loss for the fifth-seeded Eagles. 


Mankato East cruised past Rochester Lourdes 6-1 on Wednesday night.

Section 3A

Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 4, Luverne 1

Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato scored three times in the third period to cement a 4-1 win over top-seeded Luverne to earn a spot in the Class A State Tournament. 

The second-seeded Dragons got goals from four different players, with Brandt Pedersen, Orrin Grangroth, Corey Benda, and Blake Johnson all scoring once in the win. 

Gaige Nath scored the only goal of the loss for Luverne.

Section 7A

Hermantown 5, Greenway 4 (2OT)

In one of the most exciting games of the postseason, Hermantown punched its ninth consecutive ticket to St. Paul with a thrilling 6-5 win over an inspired Greenway team in double-overtime at Amsoil Arena in Duluth. 

Tyler Watkins scored the game-winner for the Hawks, finishing the night with a pair of goals and two assists. Linemates Jacob Herter and Blake Biondi also recorded four points in the win, with Biondi scoring twice and dishing out a pair of assists and Herter racking up four helpers. Brady Baker also scored for the top-seeded Hawks. 

Wes Johnson scored two goals to lead the No. 2 seed Raiders, with Cameron Lantz and Nikolai Rajala each adding a single goal in the loss. Goaltender Ville Hyttinen totaled 39 saves for the Raiders.

Section 2AA

Minnetonka 5,  Holy Family Catholic 4 (2OT)

Josh Luedtke scored early in the second overtime to lift No. 1 seed Minnetonka to a 5-4 win over Holy Family Catholic at 3M Arena at Mariucci, finally solving Fire goaltender Conan Hayton who stood tall between the pipes even in defeat. 

The goal was Luedtke's second, with Luke Loheit, Joe Molenaar, and Teddy Lagerback all chipping in one goal apiece. Lagerback's goal sent the game to overtime with just 3.2 seconds remaining in regulation. 

Jack Haley scored two goals for the Fire, with single goals from Joe Simon and John Simon. Hayton finished the game with 52 saves for the second-seeded Fire.

Section 4AA Semifinals

Hill-Murray 3, Stillwater 1

Ben Helgeson scored a goal and added two assists to lead Hill-Murray to a 3-1 win over Stillwater in the Section 4AA semifinals, setting the No. 2 seed Pioneers up for a meeting with top-seeded White Bear Lake in the section final. 

Mike Fleischhacker and Lucas Wahlin also scored goals for Hill-Murray, while Adam Eisele tallied the lone goal in the loss for the No. 3 seed Ponies.

Section 6AA

Edina 8, Wayzata 1

Upended by the Trojans in last year's Section 6AA finals, Edina scored early and often en route to hanging eight goals on their Lake Conference rivals in Wednesday night's 8-1 win at 3M Arena at Mariucci. 

In a true testament of overall depth, seven players scored for the top-seeded Hornets, with Jett Jungels leading the way with a pair of tallies. Max Borst, Peter Colby, Mason Nevers, Ben Brinkman, Mike Vorlicky, and Demetrios Koumontzis each scored once in the win for the Hornets. 

Mr. Hockey finalist and Minnesota commit Colin Schmidt scored the lone goal of the game for the No. 3 seed Wayzata.  

Section 8AA

St. Michael-Albertville 6, Moorhead 5

Despite surrendering three goals in the third period, St. Michael-Albertville escaped with a 6-5 upset win over Moorhead in the Section 8AA finals, sending the Knights to their first state tournament appearance. 

Cole Lehmann, Brady Berning, Luc Laylin, Adam Flammang, Cody Kelly, and Jordan Drobinski all scored once for the No. 2 seed Knights, while Justin Damon finished with 28 saves in the win. 

Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe, Carter Randklev, Cole O'Connell, Parker Larson, and Karson Kvalevong tallied goals for the top-seeded Spuds, the defending Class AA state runners-up.
