94 Saves Breaks Previous Team Record of 65

Apparently, playing the equivalent of nearly two full games doesn’t phase Lehigh Valley Phantoms goaltender and Baudette, MN native Alex Lyon.

The former Lake of the Woods and Yale standout stopped 94 shots in the American Hockey League’s longest game on record, backstopping his Phantoms to a 2-1 win over Charlotte Checkers in the fifth overtime on Wednesday night (and into Thursday morning).

Forward Alex Krushelnyski ended the marathon with a one-timer from the slot and earned a certain level of admiration from Lyon. "(I gave him) a big hug and a kiss on the cheek," Lyon said with a chuckle on Friday morning. "We're just so happy (to win), and happy for him as well.

Although he's thrilled with the win, Lyon admitted that the significant amount of media attention his performance earned has worn on him.

"I think I (could) stop pucks all day if I never had to talk about it," Lyon said half-jokingly.

The win comes in the fourth game of the first round of the AHL’s Calder Cup playoffs. Lehigh owns a 3-1 series lead over the Checkers, the Carolina Hurricanes AHL affiliate. Lehigh Valley is the affiliate for the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers.

Lyon’s performance surpassed the previous team’s record of 65 saves, set by Scott Munroe on April 24, 2008, and is second all-time in AHL history. Former Albany River Rat goaltender Michael Leighton owns that record with 98 stops in the same game Munroe set his (previous) team record.

In a taste of the NHL, Lyon posted a record of 7-4-2 in limited time with the Flyers this season, recording a goals-against average of 2.75 and a save percentage of .905. He was a finalist for the 2015 Mike Richter Award, awarded the nation’s top collegiate goaltender, and won Minnesota's Frank Brimsek Award in 2011 as the state's top netminder.
