The Stars Are Brighter In Bemidji

There's something about stepping onto an unfamiliar sheet of ice, especially when that ice belongs to a Division I hockey program.

The Bantam Elite League took its show on the road this weekend, making the trek to the Sanford Center, home of the Bemidji State Beavers for a slate of games. The bright lights didn't phase the players, who turned in outstanding performances throughout the weekend that have been highlighted below.

Top Performers

Drew Fisher, Bruins

Fisher was a bright spot with a goal and two assists for the Bruins during a tough weekend, as the Bruins dropped three straight games after winning its opener in Bemidji.

Luke McCarthy and Jack Seaverson, Penguins

A hard-luck weekend fell on the Penguins, as the team suffered three losses by a combined four goals. Helping mitigate the sting of those defeats were McCarthy and Seaverson, as McCarthy notched three goals over the weekend and Seaverson tallied two goals and added an assist.

Cole Spicer and Jaksen Panzer, Team North Dakota

The duo continued their torrid run through the league this weekend, powering Team North Dakota to three wins in four games. Spicer racked up five goals and nine points, while Panzer nearly mirrored Spicer's production with four goals and nine points. Both Spicer and Panzer have totaled 16 points through eight games.

Trey Ausmus and Connor McClure, North Stars

Ausmus continued his impressive play from the blue line with a goal and seven points for the North Stars, as the "home" team picked up its first two wins of the BEL season, scoring victories over Team Wisconsin and the Bruins. McClure tallied two goals and six points over the four games, making himself the team's third-leading scorer.

Luke McCarthy scores one of his three goals during the Penguins' weekend in Bemidji.

Matthew Rafalski, Team Wisconsin

The smooth-skating defenseman dished out a pair of assists for Team Wisconsin. While the squad has yet to win a game, the boys in red skated closely with the Sharks in the last two games of the weekend, losing 3-2 in both contests.

Connor Kurth, Isaac Howard, and Nate Hardy, Kings

The Kings won three of four games over the weekend, falling only to Great Plains by a score of 5-4 on Sunday morning. Howard paced the Kings with six goals and 11 points, followed by Kurth's nine points and Hardy's seven points. Howard and Kurth are No. 1 and No. 2 in overall BEL scoring with 23 and 22 points respectively.

Landen Gunderson, Great Plains

The first-year bantam scored two goals and totaled five points as Great Plains won all four games in Bemidji. Normally lined up at on the front line, Gunderson has played a mix of both forward and defense during the BEL season.

Adam Marshall, Sharks

Marshall has been a raging bull throughout the past few weeks, and his inspired play continued at the Sanford Center. Marshall recorded two goals and four points as the Sharks went 2-2 on the weekend. Curiously enough, all four of the Sharks' games were decided by 3-2 scores.

Top Goaltenders

Ryan Wallin and Nick Erickson, Great Plains

The netminders combined to go 4-0 over the weekend, with Walin stopping 38 of 41 shots and Erickson denying 49 of 55 shots. Wallin currently paces the league with a save percentage of .952.

Trent Wiemken, Team North Dakota

Wiemken stopped 55 of 61 shots and won both games he played in for Team North Dakota. Wiemken has posted a record of 4-1 so far with a save percentage of .908.

Toby Hopp, Sharks

Hopp played in all four games this weekend, posting a 2-2 record with both losses coming by just one goal. Out of the 72 shots he faced over those four games, Hopp stopped 62. Hopp has played over 250 minutes for the Sharks.

Top Games

Kings 8, North Stars 7 (SO) (Saturday)

The Kings jumped out a 6-1 lead early in the second half, sparking initiating league's running-time rule. However, the North Stars would have none of that, rattling off five goals to tie the game with just under three minutes remaining. The Kings would take a 7-6 lead just 14 seconds later, which the North Stars answered 13 seconds after that to send the game into its conclusive shootout.

Great Plains 4, Penguins 2 (Saturday)

What better way to make your mark in your first weekend of BEL action than to score a game-winning goal? Carter Krenke (featured below during his Player of the Game interview) buried a shot from close range to lift Great Plains to their fourth win of the weekend with just 1:43 remaining in regulation, earning Player of the Game honors in the process.

Sharks 3, Team Wisconsin 2 (Sunday)

Team Wisconsin's Johnny Thrasher tied the game with 30 seconds remaining in the second half, seemingly handing Team Wisconsin its first chance at a win or tie in the BEL. Nine seconds later, Adam Marshall ruined that chance, netting his second goal of the weekend and giving the Sharks their second win in Bemidji.
