Sharks Claim BEL Minor Championship

Freddie Berberena knew.

He knew he was missing a seat at the Vikings game.

He knew his team was down 2-0 entering the second half.

He knew which players could claw his team back into Sunday’s Bantam Elie League Minor Division title game.

Gavyn Thoreson. Wyatt Olson. Jack Kernan.

“Both of those kids and Gavyn Thoreson have been amazing this whole weekend,” Berberena said, referring to Olson and Kernan, who teamed to score the game-winning goal with just 29 seconds to play in regulation, lifting the Sharks to a 3-2 win over the Bruins.

“We knew if we were gonna win the game, they were gonna go out there and do it for us,” Berberena said of the trio.

Down 2-0 after a pair of goals by Bruins’ standout Eli Miller, Finn Brink began the comeback with a goal for the Sharks, followed by a highlight-reel tally by Thoreson 46 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2.

Olson gathered a loose puck behind the Bruins' net before backhanding a pass across the slot to Kernan, who buried the puck past Bruins' goaltender Maclain Weasler.

Kernan, who scored the game-winning goal in a shootout of Saturday’s semifinal win over the North Stars, said that his playing style as a puck-hunter allowed him to score on Sunday, and added that his stellar performance in the playoffs was a product of positivity.

“Just been feeling good this weekend and found some hot streaks,” Kernan said.

Olson made his return to the ice after nursing a rib injury during the league’s weekend in Grand Forks and totaled two goals and five points in three playoff games.

“I was kind of down with all that off-time, not being able to play,” Olson said. (I) was a little nervous coming back.”

Olson’s nerves took a backseat to performance for the weekend, as his five points helped him conclude his BEL season with 10 goals and 17 points.

The North Stars took third place with a 4-3 win over Team North Dakota, as Max Roby scored with 30 seconds left in regulation on a rebound for the game-winner.
