Warroad gets revenge on Breck with convincing 3-0 win Friday

It was February 24, 2018 when Warroad  fell in overtime to Breck on a Sadie Lindsay goal past Quinn Kuntz to win the state championship. Flanked by much of the same team,  the Warriors trekked back to the Twin Cities for a rematch in the defending state champions' home rink.

At first glance, the Mustangs looked fast and well prepared for the challenge. They traded punches early in the first period, but eventually the ice tipped nearly upside down with Warroad pressuring Breck with a solid forecheck and aggressive neutral zone play that kept the Mustangs pinned their own zone. After the first period, there was no score, but Warroad was leading in all statistical and emotional categories.

The Warriors out skated out hustled and out shot the Mustangs (16-5) but had nothing to show for it. 2017 YHH Goalie of the Year Uma Corniea showed her best stuff making several key saves in the first period. "For eighth grade, she's pretty darn good," said David Marvin, Warroad head coach. "She's great, out she's out there with a big smile on her face even after a loss."

Breck 8th grader Uma Corniea stopping one of 40 shots Friday in Golden Valley

The Warriors broke the seal in the second period when Sydney Phaneuf got loose in the high slot after a Breck turnover and beat Corniea on the low blocker side. A goal that woke up the defending champions. For much of the next nine minutes, Breck would begin to counter punch the Warriors effectively getting solid chances, mostly in odd player rushes. The Warriors were able to answer when Sophomore center Genevieve Hendrickson poked a loose puck past Corniea to give her team a huge goal tipping the scale back their direction. "We like to play on the edge and tonight we got there," said Marvin.

Quinn Kuntz, Warroad

The Warriors were able to put Breck away in the third with strong defense and great goaltending by Ohio State commit Quinn Kuntz. Kuntz had a 23 shot shutout, stopping several big shots en route to a nice win. "Definitely that (championship game) is still fresh in our minds," said Kuntz after the game. "I just tried to stay focused and dialed in the whole game."

The whole Warrior team was dialed Friday, can they keep it that way the whole season? "I know come February if this win means anything, it might hurt us a little bit," said Marvin whether the game means much to his team long term.

Players to Watch

Hannah Cornelusen, Warroad

Hannah Corneliusen, Warroad - hands down the most explosive player on the ice. Has all the physical tools to play at the next level. Unselfish and powerful player.

Uma Corniea, Breck - great technical goalie with a flare for a dramatic save every time she plays. Friday, she was a total drama queen (in the best sense of the the way).

Kaitlyn Kotlowski, Warroad - Wisconsin commit has a commanding presence on the blue. Quick release shot, very confident with the puck on her stick.

Lindsay Sisters, Breck - Like peanut butter and jelly, Ava and Sadie Lindsay can't be missed. With quick hands and smooth feet, they will give Breck opponent's trouble for the next few years.

Karlie Meeker, Warroad - Wow factor skill...tremendous skater and puck handler. Plays an exciting free-wheeling style of play from the blue line.

Ava Lindsay, Breck
