12A Final: Stillwater Edges Andover On St. Martin Bomb

She twists. She winds. She fires. It's over.

A slapshot from Josie St. Martin beat a screened Layla Hemp cleanly to earn the Stillwater Ponies a 1-0 victory over the Huskies in the 12A finals of the December Danglefest.

The championship win was indicative of how the Ponies advanced to the finals, scrapping their way past Burnsville/Apple Valley and Edina Green before downing the Huskies. The semifinal win over the Hornets was earned earlier on Sunday through a shootout, in which St. Martin and Avery Braunshausen each scored.

Goaltender Lily Timmons stopped 18 shots to earn the shutout for the Ponies en route to being named to the Danglefest's all-tournament team. Andover netminder Hemp made 21 saves in the tough loss.

For her efforts, both offensively with three of her team's five tournament goals, and defensively by blocking a shot in the final seconds of Sunday's final, Stillwater's St. Martin was named Most Valuable Player.

10A: Edina Green Sneaks Past Orono-Westonka

Edina doesn't like to make anything look too easy.

The Hornets' 10A team (Green) skated to three victories over the weekend, winning by no more than two goals in any one contest. That streak culminated on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win over a high-flying Orono-Westonka squad that had outscored its opponents 13-4 entering Sunday's finale.

Emerson Rock put Edina Green up 1-0 in the first period on a goal assisted by Kendall Gnos, a 1-0 advantage that was extended to 2-0 after Kathryn Ewers scored early in the second period for the Hornets. Ewers' goal was unassisted. Brelynn Koehler pulled the Warriors within one goal at 2-1, but even with a player-advantage and an empty net, the Hornet defense stood up to the challenge.

Edina Green goaltender Lucy Bertram was chosen as the tournament's Most Valuable Player, allowing just six goals in three games and making an impressive 24 saves in the championship win over the Warriors.

Lucy Bertram was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for the 10A level.
